Open Enrollment

Did you know that in Nevada, your home address doesn’t have to determine where your child goes to school? Thanks to a law passed in 2025 (Assembly Bill 533), families across the state now have access to more public school options — a policy called open enrollment.

What is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment means you can choose any public school that feels right for your child, even if it’s not the one closest to your home. If a public school has available space, you can apply for a seat regardless of which neighborhood you live in.

How does it work?

It’s Up To You!
You aren’t required to move schools. If you love your current neighborhood school, your child’s spot is still guaranteed.

Fair and Open
Open enrollment is designed to give every student a fair shot. Students cannot be rejected based on their grades, income, or athletic ability. And, if your student does not get accepted to a school they apply to, there is an appeals process for families.

Priority Access
Students currently attending schools with lower performance ratings (1 or 2 stars) are given priority in the application process.

Important Deadlines

The primary application window for the 2026 school year ended on January 13, 2026. However, some schools may accept applications on a rolling basis after this date.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Open Enrollment means families can select a public school that feels right for their child, even if it’s not the school closest to their home. You don’t have to live in a certain neighborhood to apply to a school.

In 2025, Nevada passed a new law called AB 533. This law lets families all across Nevada use Open Enrollment for the first time.

While the priority application deadline closed on January 13, some schools are still accepting applications on a rolling basis. We encourage families to apply as soon as possible!

Families pick the public school they want and apply. Families can apply for up to three schools per child. Kids who already go to a school get to stay there first. If more students apply than there are spots, the school uses a lottery, like pulling names from a hat. This helps make the process fair. A kid can’t be rejected from a school based on grades, athletic ability, income, etc., and if a student is not accepted to their school of choice, their family can file an appeal.

Before, kids could only go to school based on where they lived. Some neighborhoods have better school options than others. Open Enrollment helps give more kids a fair chance to go to a school that works best for them.

In other states, students who moved to schools that fit them better did better in school. Many students had better grades and graduated on time. This helped kids from families who didn’t always have many high-quality school options in their neighborhoods.

Yes. 83 out of 100 Nevada voters agree that parents should be able to choose the public school that is best for their child.

Open Enrollment is a choice, not a rule. Families don’t lose anything by learning about it.
