About Our Data
Where do we get our data?
School data is provided by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) every September for the previous full school year. The Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF) summarizes public school performance. It’s like a report card for schools that also tells us about how students are performing in that school. For more information on NSPF, click here.
How are stars determined?
The NSPF Star Rating system was developed by Nevada teachers, administrators, and other community stakeholders. It summarizes a school’s performance based on multiple indicators and measures, depending on the school level. These measures include academic achievement, growth, English Language proficiency, opportunity gaps, and student engagement.
Schools earn points based on performance in each measure, which are added together to generate a score for each indicator. The results for each indicator are then added together to create a total Index Score, which is on a scale between 1 and 100. This Index Score corresponds to a star rating from one to five. The overview of Nevada’s School Rating System on the Department’s website provides information on all indicators and measures, the point-earning potential of each, and a description of each star rating.
Parents, students, educators, and community members can use star ratings to understand how schools are performing and closely examine the indicators and measures that determine the ratings.
What has been COVID’s impact on star ratings?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Education granted waivers to states for reporting. Star ratings were not given for the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, or 2021-2022 school years.
